New details reveal the driving force behind the Oilers’ coaching change.
The Edmonton Oilers have officially moved on from head coach Kris Knoblauch, parting ways with the bench boss on Thursday in a decision that also saw assistant coach Mark Stuart relieved of his duties.
Knoblauch’s dismissal marks the end of a turbulent but high-profile run in Edmonton. Since taking over in November 2023, replacing Jay Woodcroft, the 47-year-old guided the Oilers to back-to-back Stanley Cup Final appearances, only to fall short against the Florida Panthers on both occasions.
However, this past season told a very different story. Edmonton struggled to maintain consistency through the regular season and ultimately exited in the first round, losing in six games to the Anaheim Ducks — a result that intensified pressure throughout the organization.
Now, new reporting from Elliotte Friedman has shed light on what may have truly driven the decision behind the scenes.
According to Friedman, Oilers owner Daryl Katz played a significant role in the coaching change, with frustration over the team’s disappointing finish becoming a key factor.
“I think the owner’s feelings were a very, very big part of this,” Friedman noted, suggesting that ownership dissatisfaction and a desire for a shift in team identity helped push the move over the line.
The decision reflects a broader sense of urgency within the organization, especially with captain Connor McDavid still under contract but the championship window far from guaranteed.
Knoblauch finishes his Oilers tenure with a 135-77-21 regular-season record and a 31-22 mark in the playoffs, having overseen 233 regular-season games behind the bench.
With this move, Edmonton now joins the Toronto Maple Leafs and Los Angeles Kings as high-profile NHL teams currently searching for a new head coach, setting up a busy offseason across the league.
