It appears that we might be getting closer than ever before to an agreement between restricted free agent Mitch Marner and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The contract negotiations between both parties have reportedly intensified in the last 48 hours. According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, “a deal could get done quickly” as talks have now escalated. It however remains unclear what type of term and dollars are currently being discussed in hopes of getting a deal done.

An agreement has yet to be reached between Marner and the Leafs as they cannot seem to agree on term and salary. The Maple Leafs prefer  a long-term contract and Marner’s camp looking at two- or three-year deal with an average annual value (AAV) in the neighbourhood of $11 million to $11.5 million.

However on Friday, more than one insider was willing to say that the talks have made progress and could see an end soon.

The 22-year-old had a breakout season last year, registering 26 goals and 68 assists for 94 points in 82 games with the Leafs.

Many believe that if a deal can be hammered out in the coming days,  it could help speed up the process for other players around the NHL.
