This was all Connor's vision. He wanted to stop the media noise and he wanted to give his team a discount.
UPDATE: McDavid met with the media this morning to break down his new contract and explain why he decided to sign such a team-friendly deal.
Listen to him below:
Yesterday Connor McDavid shocked the hockey world by signing a two year contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers worth just $12.5 million per season.
McDavid, of course, is worth far, far, faaaar more than just $12.5 million and could have signed for a lot more money on a lot longer term. In fact, McDavid could have basically set his demands and the Oilers, or any other team for that matter, would be crazy not to meet his demands.
And you know what?
That's exactly what happened.
NHL insider Frank Seravalli reports today that McDavid's agent Judd Moldaver and Oilers GM Stan Bowman didn't talk term or salary at any point in their negotiations. The way Seravalli puts it, the two sides never even really negotiated at all. They simply had an open dialogue about the team and its future and how McDavid fits into it all. No contract talks though.
That all changed yesterday in a five minute phone conversation where McDavid himself took over. He put out his terms, two years at $12.5 million per and Bowman jumped at it. Five minutes later the contract was registered and the story became public.
From Seravalli:
"Sources indicate that even as recently as Sunday night, there was not one single number... that was volleyed back and forth between the Edmonton Oilers and Connor McDavid's camp. Nothing. I had said... that Connor McDavid is going to wake up one day and decide either that he wants to sign or not. And he's going to write down a number on a piece of paper... and the Oilers are going to say, 'Thank you very much, Mr. McDavid. We'll have that contract drafted up right away.' And guess what? The call took five minutes on Monday morning. Stan Bowman was very clear that this isn't what he would have pitched... it certainly would have been a lot more lucrative. But this was all done at the behest of Connor McDavid, his vision and what he sees for the Edmonton Oilers moving forward.'
Fascinating. McDavid essentially bypassed all the negotiations and said, 'This is what I want. Let's make it happen.' Five minutes later and it was a done deal.
Turns out negotiations can be easy if both sides want to best for each other.
Reading between the lines of Bowman's press release yesterday and it's clear that he was alluding to the scenario that Seravalli describes.
From Bowman yesterday:
“Yeah, this was unique. I would say there's been nothing else like this negotiation, I guess if you want to call it that. It was really more of a dialogue and a conversation throughout the last few months, and really nothing to do with the contract itself. Usually, when you have a negotiation, it's more about the back and forth on the terms or the structure of the deal. But that was never talked about. It was really just the other parts about where we were heading and the vision for the team; how we were going to improve, and all those types of discussions. So very unusual, but very interesting. It was great to have those conversations. I don't know if I've ever talked to [McDavid’s agent] Judd Moldaver as much as I have in the last month or so, but it's been great. It’s been different, but it was fun.”
One thing's clear: McDavid's calling the shots in Edmonton... in more ways than one.
