Ontario Premier Doug Ford and the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario unveiled increased COVID-19 restrictions today that will limit sporting events in the province to just 1,000 fans until the order is lifted. This, of course, affects the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators for home games in the province of Ontario.
As for the rest of the Canadian teams in the NHL, there are varying levels of attendance allowed at games and it's expected that later today the province of Quebec will announce even tighter restrictions that could effectively ban ANY fans from attending Montreal Canadiens home games. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reports that the Vancouver Canucks could be looking at some postponements due to the province of British Columbia limiting capacity to 50%.
I'll be honest with you... I'm as Canadian as a maple leaf and I bleed patriotic red and white, but... something's got to give. If these games can't be played in Canada the way that they're meant to be played then the teams will just have to play out the string in the United States. It worked in 2020... why not in 2022? Each team aside from the Edmonton Oilers was forced to play their home games in Edmonton during the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs, so I don't see why it would be an issue to have Canadian teams play their home games in the United States.
