This suspension is pretty much exactly what we expected.

The National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety has issued a six game suspension to Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith following his slash to the head of Minnesota Wild forward Charlie Coyle. This will cost Keith 5 regular season games and one playoff game, historically the National Hockey League has put more weight on playoff games when issuing suspensions, and tends to give them value equal to two regular season games.

The initial reaction to the incident was heavy criticism from the general public, however after multiple other angles of the incident were released, and showed that Coyle went to great lengths to provoke Keith, the thought was that a suspension in the 6-7 game range would be the punishment.

Obviously nothing will justify Keith responding the way he did, but it may have played a role in him not getting more games.
