The NHL held a meeting in Montreal this weekend in honor of the league's 100th anniversary, and an interesting topic that came up was how the power play could, and maybe should, change.

"The foundation was laid here to make some changes to how penalties potentially are called and served, specifically in overtime," Chris Johnston said on Hockey Night in Canada. "Any call now that goes in overtime is a 4-on-3 power play for 2 minutes. GMs out there believe that that might be a little bit too punitive and there was a brief discussion about perhaps slimming that back to a 1 minute power play."

"Similar to what Chris said, I think there may be some conversation in March about should the puck over the glass and the faceoff penalty be 1 minute in regulation too," Elliotte Friedman added.

These are very interesting points - power plays in overtime have generally shown to give the defending team a significant disadvantage - changing the penalty to 1 minute would make a lot of sense.

Furthermore, Friedman mentioned the possibility of two controversial penalties being slimmed down as well. Fans have called for the puck over the glass and faceoff penalties to be done away with. Trimming them down to a minute may be a good compromise.

What do you think of these potential changes?
