Over the past few years the breakaway competition at the National Hockey League All-Star game as become a bit of a joke, and it appears that the NHL as well as the players have taken notice of that fact.

On Wednesday Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman announced that the NHL was getting rid of the breakaway challenge entirely, and would instead be replacing it with something called the "Four Line Challenge."

From Friedman:

With the demise of the breakaway challenge, which was as much the players’ decision as the league’s, the skills competition adds what’s called “The Four Line Challenge” as a replacement. Players will try to hit targets in the net from the closest blueline, centre ice, the far blueline and then the opposite goal line. Goalies will be offered the chance to try from the farthest distance, with more points available if they can do it.

It doesn't sound like the most thrilling of competitions on the surface, but we'll have to wait to see how it goes over live on January 28th at the skills competition.
