UPDATE: Multiple NHL insiders are indeed reporting that the NHL will enter a pause starting Wednesday, December 22nd.

Read below for our earlier report on this developing story.

According to a report from NHL insider Frank Seravalli, the entire league appears headed toward a shutdown due to the recent outbreak in COVID-19 amongst the league's players and staff members.

To date, the NHL has postponed 44 games, with 39 of those coming just in the last week.

Earlier today the Edmonton Oilers announced that they have shut down their facilities until after the Christmas break, as well.

If you're keeping score at home that's now nine NHL teams on a break while the league attempts to get its recent outbreak of COVID-19 under control. The Oilers join the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Florida Panthers, Colorado Avalanche, Nashville Predators, Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins and Columbus Blue Jackets who have elected to extend their break in order to get back to full health and limit the spread of the virus amongst other teams.
