Report: NHLPA will not back Hellebuyck in Jets' standoff

It's official... Helleybuck has the support of NO ONE.

UPDATE: According to ESPN insider Greg Wyshynski, the NHLPA will NOT be stepping in to resolve the ongoing dispute between Connor Hellebuyck and the Winnipeg Jets. Instead, the Players' Association will watch how things develop before weighing in on things.

From Wyshynski:

Obviously the concern here is that teams can essentially keep a player off their roster with indefinite suspensions, so long as they pay them an keep them on their active roster. That's not a real solution and, if things continue down this road, you have to imagine that the NHLPA will step in at some point.

For our earlier report on Hellebuyck and the latest on the situation in Winnipeg, read below.

The Connor Hellebuyck saga in Winnipeg has been one of the most compelling storylines of the early 2026-27 NHL season, and it looks like we're approaching a critical inflection point. The former MVP and three-time Vezina Trophy winner has been away from the Jets since refusing to report to training camp, and his suspension is expected to wrap up by the end of this week. That means something has to give, and soon.

The Clock Is Ticking on a Trade

According to ESPN's Emily Kaplan, at least three teams are currently in discussions to acquire Hellebuyck, though there's no certainty a deal gets done before Friday. The Buffalo Sabres and Carolina Hurricanes have been specifically named as potential landing spots, though the identity of the third team remains unknown at this point.

If Winnipeg can't find a trade partner this week, the expectation is that the Jets will resume paying Hellebuyck his salary but ask him to stay away from the team. That would be a costly arrangement for the organization, considering the goaltender still has five years remaining on the seven-year, $59.5 million deal he inked back in 2023. He carries a full no-movement clause this season, which shifts to a modified no-trade clause next summer, making the trade landscape even more complicated.

Hellebuyck has reportedly been staying sharp by getting regular ice time in Michigan during his time away from the club. The 33-year-old hasn't suited up for an NHL game since April 13, but clearly he's not sitting around waiting for the phone to ring.

A Locker Room Bracing for the Unknown

Meanwhile, back in Winnipeg, the Jets are trying to stay focused on hockey while this cloud lingers overhead. The team sits at 4-2-2 through eight games, a respectable start all things considered, but the absence of one of the world's premier goaltenders is impossible to ignore.

Captain Adam Lowry, who has been teammates with Hellebuyck for the entirety of the goalie's 12-year NHL career, acknowledged that if Hellebuyck does walk back through those doors, it won't be a simple reunion. Lowry said there would need to be real conversations and a "water under the bridge" moment before the team could move forward together. He admitted he wasn't thrilled with the way things have played out but emphasized that the group remains committed to winning a Stanley Cup regardless of who's in the room.

Winger Kyle Connor declined to weigh in on the situation over the weekend, having previously described Hellebuyck's trade request as "heartbreaking." Head coach Scott Arniel took a more pragmatic approach, saying he's focused on the 23 players currently on his roster and will deal with the Hellebuyck situation when and if it materializes.

GM Kevin Cheveldayoff left the door open during training camp, noting that "no doors are closed" when it comes to Hellebuyck's future with the organization. But the reality is that this situation feels like it's heading toward a resolution one way or another. Whether Hellebuyck gets moved to one of those three interested teams or awkwardly returns to a locker room full of teammates he walked away from, the next few days should tell us a lot about what the rest of this season looks like for both the goaltender and the Jets.
