Same old, same old in Toronto
The Toronto Maple Leafs are mired in the midst of an 8 game losing streak and are almost guaranteed to miss the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in 10 years.
The Leafs are currently 13 points out of a playoff spot and the team's fanbase, affectionately known as Leafs Nation, are not happy.
There are calls for GM Brad Treliving to be fired, there are calls for head coach Craig Berube to be fired and there are calls for captain Auston Matthews to be traded.
NHL insider Chris Johnston warns Leafs Nation not too get too carried away though. Johnston reported today that changes are unlikely to happen, at least until the offseason. On TSN's Insider Trading segment today, Johnston reported that Leafs ownership will not be making any changes to their management or coaching staff until mid-April at the earliest, after the team's regular season concludes.
From CJ:
"At this point in time... the sense is they want to get through this period of time. While all the people on the outside are asking, 'What's gonna happen with the management staff? What about Craig Berube and the coaching staff? Will Auston Matthews stick around? All these questions I don't believe we'll get any clarity on whatsoever until after mid-April. That leave everyone in kind of a weird spot right now... but that's just where we're at, I don't get the sense we're going to see any action taken before the last game is played this season."
One thing I'd bet my life on... one of or both of Treliving or Berube will be given their walking papers.
New Leafs president Keith Pelley did not hire either Treliving or Berube and there's a belief out there that he'd like to start a new era of Leafs hockey with two fresh new hires.
Stay tuned. We're likely to see the most interesting offseason in Leafs history since... well... since just a few years ago when the whole Kyle Dubas and Brendan Shanahan fiasco played out.
