We reported yesterday that the Edmonton Oilers were set to hire former Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli, although tat the time exactly what role he would take remained unclear. Today the new head of Oilers Entertainment Group Bob Nicholson made it crystal clear that he was cleaning house in a major way, appointing Chiarelli as both President and General Manager effective immediately. While that's great news for fans of the team, perhaps the best part of that news was the fact that the reign of incompetence from Kevin Lowe and Craig MacTavish is officially at an end. For what seems like several years now Oilers fans and media alike have criticized both men only to have them responded to their critics with arrogance and false reassurances, and it's hard to imagine anyone in the city of Edmonton will remember either man fondly or be sad to see them go. Patrick LaForge also stepped down this morning. Lowe is set to take a role in the business side of OEG while MacTavish's new role, if any, remains unclear.
