Apparently Oilers owner Daryl Katz wanted a new arena deal by any means necessary. The Globe and Mail’s David Shoalts wrote a piece today on Katz's attempt to buy the OHL’s Erie Otters and move them to Hamilton. His goal was to“take control of his ultimate prize – the hockey lease at Copps Coliseum.” Katz's endgame was to control of the hockey lease at Copps Coliseum so he could threaten to move the Oilers to Hamilton in order to get more public funding for a new Edmonton arena. Katz issued an apology to Edmonton fans for the use of fans loyalty as leverage. “I took for granted your support and your love of the Oilers,” Katz said in a full page ad in the Edmonton Journal. “That was wrong, and I apologize.” While the tactics may have been underhanded in nature, there effectiveness can not be questioned as the Oilers’ new rink is currently under construction in downtown Edmonton, set to open in 2016. How do you fans feel about having an owner willing to do whatever it takes to get things done?
