Report: Oilers shut Puljujarvi down for the season

Ugh… and he’ll have to clear waivers for the AHL next season. What a nightmare.

According to a report from Edmonton Oilers insider Jason Gregor, the Oilers have shut down injured forward Jesse Puljujarvi for the rest of the season. He’ll undergo hip surgery next week.

This is obviously awful news as it essentially robs Oilers management of a chance to get Puljujarvi some more development time in the AHL. Come next season, Puljujarvi will require waivers before being sent down to the Bakersfield Condors and, given his skillset and his potential, there’s no doubt he’d be claimed in an instant.

The 20 year old Puljujarvi, the Oilers’ 4th overall pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, has just 17 goals and 37 points in 139 career games with the Oilers.
