Despite the fact that he is today president of an opposing team, the Edmonton Oilers have announced their intention to honor former head coach, general manager and president Glen Sather. The decision to raise a banner in his honor likely comes as a direct result of Sather's decision to step down as general manager and focus on his duties as president of the New York Rangers. Kevin Lowe of the Oilers Entertainment Group released a statement addressing the decision to honor Sather.
"I can tell you with certainty, none of that success would have happened without Glen Sather,” said Lowe. "Glen was a mentor, leader, protector and father figure for so many players that wore the Oilers sweater. He showed us what it meant to be champions both on and off the ice. "It will be a very special day for our fans and organization when we celebrate Glen’s contribution and have him join our other legends in raising his banner to the rafters at Rexall Place."
Sather won a combined five Stanley Cups as a member of the Oilers four as a coach and one as president and general manager. The banner ceremony will be held on Dec 11th when the Oilers face the Rangers.
