Montreal Canadiens defenceman P.K. Subban spoke with NHL senior vice president of hockey operations Colin Campbell regarding his most recent fine for diving/embellishment.
According to Sportsnet’s Damien Cox, Subban and Campbell had a lengthy phone conversation Friday after the league announced the star blueliner's wallet was $3,000 lighter for his third offence of the season.
This discipline falls under NHL Rule 64, which was approved by the board of governors and NHL Players’ Association prior to the season in order to “bring attention to and more seriously penalize players (and teams) who repeatedly dive and embellish in an attempt to draw penalties.”
Here’s how the punishment breaks down:
First offence = Warning
Second offence = $2,000 player fine
Third offence = $3,000 player fine
Fourth offence = $4,000 player fine, $2,000 coach fine
Fifth offence = $5,000 player fine, $3,000 coach fine
Sixth offence = $5,000 player fine, $4,000 coach fine
Seventh offence = $5,000 player fine, $5,000 coach fine
Eighth offence = $5,000 player fine, $5,000 coach fine
So far 59 players have been flagged for diving or embellishment in 2014-15 and Subban is only player with three violations. If he is flagged a fourth time it will cost him another $4,000 and it will cost Canadiens head coach Michel Therrien $2,000.
For head coaches, each fine issued to a player on his team counts toward his total, according to the league. Also, players do not get a clean slate once the playoffs begin.
I can only imagine what Subban had to say for himself.
