Report: Penguins attempted blockbuster trade before settling for Sheahan
Keystone Press

Tough times in Montreal. With the Montreal Canadiens getting off to their worst start in franchise history, fans of the CH are calling for GM Marc Bergevin to make some sort of move, ANY move, to improve the team’s fortunes. And, according to TSN’s Darren Dreger, one of the team’s biggest trade assets is generating league-wide interest. Forward Alex Galchenyuk is a 23-year-old former 30 goal scorer who is currently playing as the team’s 4th line winger, rather than his projected position of 1st line center. He’s off to a dreadful start with just one goal through eight games and could he find himself on his way out of Montreal.

“The Pittsburgh Penguins are a team that certainly had some interest in Galchenyuk before making the Riley Sheahan trade, they were looking for a third line center and they’ve now filled that void," said Dreger on TSN's That's Hockey.

Wow! You have to imagine what Galchenyuk could have done with a fresh start in Pittsburgh. The kid may be underperforming with a bad team right now, but a refresh on the Penguins could have turned things around for him in a hurry. While we may never know what could have been, don’t rule out the possibility of such a trade happening before the season is over. If the Habs can’t turn things around in a hurry, Bergevin could get incredibly desperate.
