The Detroit Red Wings are in a tailspin to the bottom of the division at the bad news just keeps on coming.

According to a report from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News, the Red Wings have now lost the services of defenseman Alexey Marchenko for several weeks after he suffered an injury during Sunday's loss to the Calgary Flames. Head coach Jeff Blashill confirmed the news:

“He’ll be out at least a week,” coach Jeff Blashill said as per the Detroit News. “It’s not months, it’ll be weeks.”

It's a big loss for Detroit as Marchenko represents their second most active penalty killer and the teams second most effective shot blocker, two holes that will be very difficult to fill especially considering the length of time he is expected to miss.

It's expected that either Xavier Ouellet or Brendan Smith, both regular healthy scratches for the Red Wings, will fill in for the injured Marchenko.
