Report: Referees saved the Leafs from a disastrous lineup mistake this evening

Nylander shouldn't be playing!

Trevor Connors

In all my years of watching NHL hockey I'm not sure I've ever seen this before!

During the 1st intermission of tonight's Game 6 between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators, Sportsnet NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported that the referees saved the Leafs from making a potentially disastrous lineup mistake.

The Leafs accidentally put forward Alex Nylander in their starting lineup over brother William Nylander, who was marked as a healthy scratch. If the puck had dropped, the Leafs would have had to remove William Nylander from their lineup.

From Friedman:

We're midway through period one in Game 6 between the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs and Sens fans are already in peak form.

While the play on the ice has been a bit sloppy and uncoordinated, the Senators faithful at Canadian Tire Centre are at the top of their game.

Check out Sens fans coming up with two fantastic taunts for Leafs stars Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews.

Up first, a 'MARNER'S LEAVING' for pending unrestricted free agent Mitch Marner:

And even better, a 'MATTHEWS' BALDING' for captain Auston Matthews:

As a middle-aged balding man myself, this one hits close to home.

Absolutely ruthless... I love it.
