The Buffalo Sabres have made some great moves since general manager Tim Murray took over the reigns of the team, but the move they made on Friday seems, at least on the surface, like a very big risk. The Sabres signed recently acquired Ryan O'Reilly to a mammoth seven year contract worth $52.5 million dollars, a deal that will pay him on average $7.5 million per season. It's a huge dollar figure for a player who frankly has not yet proven that he's truly capable of being an elite level NHL player, and it gets worse. The Sabres have essentially made it impossible for O'Reilly to be bought out by structuring his contract with an average sakary of $1 million per season, the rest of it to be paid in signing bonuses each year. O'Reilly has the potential to be that good, but whether or not this will work out for Buffalo at this point remains a huge gamble.
