Report: Sidney Crosby's future with Penguins leaked!

He's been the face of the franchise ever since he was drafted with the 1st overall selection in the 2005 NHL Draft, and the Pittsburgh Penguins have been the only team that he's ever played for. 

Sidney Crosby will go down as one of the all-time great players in National Hockey League history, and he helped as much as anyone possibly could have to keep the Penguins not only from relocation, but leading them to a trio of Stanley Cup championships that will forever cement his legacy. 

But the reality of the situation is that he's not "The Kid" anymore, and is on the wrong side of 35 years of age, along with his longtime teammates Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang. Right now, the Penguins are fighting to try and prevent a second straight non-playoff appearance, and there have already been major changes to the franchise by new general manager Kyle Dubas. 

He's set to become a free agent after next season, but it appears as though he could be on the verge of an extension. According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the two sides are working on a new contract that could be agreed upon later this year in July. 

"There's already talk of a Sidney Crosby extension coming in July," Pagnotta wrote. "The Pittsburgh Penguins aren't going through a rebuild. Not yet. They'll be active this summer trying to retool on the fly." 

Despite his age, Crosby has shown no signs of slowing down, as he's tallied an impressive 33 goals and 35 assists in 67 games played; he tallied a goal and an assist in yesterday's 6-3 win at PPG Paints Arena over the slumping Red Wings, helping to keep his team mathematically alive in the standings. 

Crosby has one year left on the 12-year pact that he signed in 2012 that pays him an AAV of $8.7 million, a nod to his jersey number.
