Report: Signing Athanasiou will cause a huge issue for Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings are moments away from announcing a contract signing for Andreas Athanasiou.

There's a catch though, Ken Holland has no cap space, and no one that can go to the AHL without clearing waivers.

Detroit's general manager will be forced to follow one of two courses of action - demote a player to the AHL via waivers to clear up some space, or make a trade. 

Riley Sheahan and Mike Green are two players that have been long-rumored to be on the trading block. Sheahan could potentially be a fit with the Pittsburgh Penguins - they need a third line center and he could fit the bill.

Several teams, including the Washington Capitals and Montreal Canadiens are starving for an experienced defenseman, so there can also be a fit there for Green.
