Just because the Toronto Maple Leafs are one of the final candidates for the services of coveted Detroit Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock does not mean they have not thought about a backup plan should they miss out on him. Sportsnet's Damien Cox reported during Saturday's Headlines segment that the Leafs are expected to speak to OHL's Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds head coach Sheldon Keefe. Whether the position would be with the Maple Leafs themselves or their AHL affiliate the Toronto Marlies has yet to be revealed, but acting GM Kyle Dubas is very familiar with Keefe. Dubas hired Keefe as head coach of the Greyhounds when he was the team's GM in 2012 and Keefe coached the Greyhounds to the best record in the OHL this season at 54-12-2. Do not be surprised if the Leafs consider him for the head coaching gig with the big club should they miss out on getting Mike Babcock. Babcock is expected to announce where he will sign next week. Would you like to see him coach the Leafs?
