The phone might be ringing for Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland, but free agent Andreas Athanasiou is also getting some interesting phone calls.
The 23-year-old has set a timeline for when he will make a decision on where he plays this year. Athanasiou is currently skating with HC Lugano in Switzerland, and is mulling over the option to go back to the NHL, or stay overseas so he can participate in the Olympics.
Hockey Canada has now reached out to Athanasiou to see his interest in representing his country next February.
The young forward will need to make a decision on his future in the next month as the NHL season is already under way, and it will likely get harder and harder for him to play in Detroit as time goes by.
If he plans on joining the Wings, Athanasiou needs to sign a contract extension before Dec. 1, or else he won't be able to suit up this season. Winnipeg Jets' Jacob Trouba famously held out for quite some time last year before finally signing a deal November 7th, 2016.
