As it stands, the Detroit Red Wings are the team with the highest number of major penalties through the 2016-2017 regular season schedule.

In a surprising turn of events, this group of players which is known significantly more for its speed and skills as opposed to their brute force is sending a clear message to the rest of the National Hockey League: they are going to stand up for each other.

That explains, then, why the Red Wings have the highest number of fights thus far.

You need not look any further than Jonathan Ericsson, who has come under fire by fans for his lacklustre defensive play. Still, the Swedish blue-liner already has two fights under his belt through three games, on top of taking a puck to the face (which subsequently required 20 stitches to fix).

Head coach Jeff Blashill is certainly happy: “We’re the new Bruise Brothers,” he told the Detroit Free Press. “We lead the league in majors, I like it.”

So far, the team can pride itself on four fights when last season, they had a grand total of eight.
