It’s hard to imagine why this guy still hasn’t earned a contract, but maybe this will do the trick?

Report: Unsigned UFA Franson receives a training camp invite

Chicago Blackhawks columnist Jay Zawaski may have uncovered the team’s plans for replacing departed defensemen Niklas Hjalmarsson and Trevor van Riemsdyk. According to Zawaski, the Hawks have been eyeing unrestricted free-agent Cody Franson, but not like you may think:

Interesting. If the Hawks are so interested in Franson, why not just sign him? He’s unrestricted, meaning he can sign with any team at any moment. Clearly there’s something about Franson that’s scaring teams away from inking him to a new deal. The big defender managed 19 points in 68 games with the Buffalo Sabres last year and is just two years removed from potting 32 points in 55 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The 6’3”, 234 lb defender has considerable offensive skill, but for whatever reason, just can’t seem to find his footing with an NHL team for long.

Originally drafted and developed by the Nashville Predators, Franson has bounced around on mostly one or two year contracts for most of his career. Can he parlay the Blackhawks’ offer into another such deal? What do you think Hawks fans, would this be a good pick up for the cash-strapped team?
