When Ottawa Senators defenseman Dion Phaneuf refused to waive his no-trade clause for the purpose of being exposed in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft, he sealed the fate of Marc Methot. Now, TSN insider Pierre LeBrun is reporting that Methot will indeed be selected by the Vegas Golden Knights in tonight’s draft.

Interesting. LeBrun doesn’t count out the idea that Methot could be flipped to another team before even joining the Golden Knights. Does this make sense? Methot, who turns 32 years old today, is a very capable defender, despite being on the wrong side of 30. Given that the Golden Knights will likely be weak at the top of their lineup, having a capable veteran like Methot on the team’s back end seems to make more sense.

In any case, how disappointed must Sens fans be right now? They get to within a goal of playing for the Stanley Cup, only to see a major piece of their core ripped away from them for no return. That’s gotta hurt.
