After going unsigned as a free agent this summer 32 year old veteran forward Stephen Gionta has elected to sign to a professional tryout with the New York Islanders.

The Islanders confirmed the news today releasing an official announcement via the team's website:

The New York Islanders announced today that Stephen Gionta has agreed to a professional tryout (PTO).

Gionta, 32, scored 11 points (1 goal\, 10 assists) and played all 82 regular season games last season with the New Jersey Devils. The Rochester, NY native finished fourth on the Devils in penalty minutes with 43.

Gionata was somewhat of a late bloomer when it comes to reaching the NHL, but he played over 60 games in each of his last three seasons as a member of the New Jersey Devils and could potentially find a bottom six role in the Islanders line up.

As always a PTO is not a contract signing, so the Islanders could eventually release Gionta without signing him to the roster.
