According to multiple reports from well respected hockey insiders, it appears that the Minnesota Wild are aggressively pursuing a trade to improve their situation in goal. First Damien Cox of Sportsnet suggested during Hockey Night in Canada's "Headlines" segment that the Minnesota Wild are taking a long hard look at the Buffalo Sabres goal tending situation. For those of you who don't know, both of Buffalo's goalies have seen their share of action this season, and both are set to become free agents at the end of the year leading many to believe that Sabres General Manager Tim Murray will be looking to trade one of his two netminders before the trade deadline. Obviously Minnesota has reached the point of desperation when it comes to finding a solution in goal this season, while goaltending hasn't been the only issue for the Wild it's been the game breaker on many nights. Elliotte Friedman arguably the most respected voice in hockey reporting also suggested that the possibility of a Wild-Sabres deal is a very real one.
“And the other one is the goaltending. They can’t get healthy there, and they can’t get enough of a save there. Now I reported on the weekend I’d heard that they’d gone after Jhonas Enroth from Buffalo. Chuck Fletcher and Tim Murray are really tight. Both denied it. Tim Murray said nobody has called on his goalies. But to me that’s a move that makes a lot of sense for Minnesota, pending what they have to give up. “And I don’t think Chuck Fletcher wants to make short-term moves. One thing he did say to me is that he’s not interested in trading his first round draft pick. So I think Minnesota is kind of caught in the middle there. But I just don’t like what I see going on there and I think there’s more there than meets the eye, off the ice.”
Only time will tell if General Manager Chuck Fletcher does indeed pull the trigger, but this could be exactly what the Wild need.
