Nothing like a summer blockbuster!
The summer of speculation has started for Dallas Stars fans.
The Stars are currently $1.8 million over the NHL's salary cap and will need to move some money out or around in order to be cap compliant before the 2025-26 season.
There's been plenty of speculation that the team will move off of 25 year old sniper Jason Robertson, but that speculation has died down since the team failed to retain center Mikael Granlund in free agency. Still, there's a possibility that Robertson, a pending RFA, gets moved this summer in the team's effort to relieve their cap situation.
NHL insider Jeff Marek named the Anaheim Ducks as a potential bidder for Robertson today, calling the Ducks a "destination" for the California native.
"I don't think Dallas Stars are going to let the Jason Robertson question linger deep into the summer; they're going to find out pretty quick what number he's looking at," Marek said on the Daily FaceOff Rundown today. "I think Dallas will have an idea in pretty early July; I see Ducks as a destination."
Incidentally, fellow NHL insider David Pagnotta has named Ducks forward Mason McTavish as a player who could be on the move thanks to some changes in personnel in Anaheim.
"I'm curious as to Mason McTavish's future...or at least stance in Anaheim; you started to hear a little bit of noise he wasn't overly thrilled with the fact his role might diminish, so maybe that leads to some trade discussions," Pagnotta said on the Leafs Morning Take podcast today.
Fans are naturally drawing a line between Robertson and McTavish in a potential blockbuster deal. And, honestly... it makes a lot of sense for both sides.
The Ducks could use a sniper like Robertson to help them generate more offense and the Stars could use a solid roster player like McTavish at a reduced cap hit. The question is... what else would it take to get a deal done?
