According to a report from NHL insider David Pagnotta and his NHL Network colleague Mike Johnson, Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin isn't the only star centerman on the trade market in the NHL this offseason.

Both Pagnotta and Johnson reported on NHL Network today that New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal's name has surfaced in trade rumors and that he could be on his way out of Long Island via trade this summer.

"This goes back to last offseason," said Pagnotta on a potential Barzal trade.

"He has a 10 team trade list," replied Johnson. "If you're a team that wants him, you've gotta get out there."

"This is not the same category as Dylan Larkin for me though," said Pagnotta. "The potential of a futures trade for Barzal just doesn't make sense for the New York Islanders. They want to add another top-six winger. But if you're moving Barzal, this is a hockey trade. You're going talent for talent."

Barzal has been one of the most dynamic and entertaining players of his generation since arriving in the NHL with the Islanders. Drafted 16th overall by the Islanders in the 2015 NHL Draft, Barzal quickly developed into the centerpiece of the franchise thanks to his elite skating, playmaking ability, and offensive creativity.

After spending additional time developing in junior hockey with the Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL, Barzal made his full-time NHL debut during the 2017-18 season. He immediately announced his arrival as one of the league's brightest young stars, recording 22 goals and 85 points in 82 games. His outstanding rookie campaign earned him the Calder Trophy as the NHL's Rookie of the Year, beating out future stars such as Clayton Keller and Brock Boeser. Islanders fans saw firsthand that the organization had found a player capable of leading the team into its next era.

Over the years, Barzal evolved into the offensive engine of the Islanders. While his point totals occasionally fluctuated due to the team's defense-first systems under head coach Barry Trotz and later coaching staffs, his importance to the franchise never diminished. His speed through the neutral zone, ability to control possession, and knack for creating scoring chances made him one of the NHL's most dangerous playmakers.

Barzal also played a key role in helping the Islanders become legitimate contenders in the early 2020s. He was instrumental during New York's back-to-back appearances in the Stanley Cup Semifinals in 2020 and 2021, producing timely offense and showcasing his ability to perform under playoff pressure. Although the Islanders fell short of reaching the Stanley Cup Final, those runs cemented Barzal's reputation as a player capable of elevating his game when the stakes are highest.

Injuries occasionally interrupted his momentum throughout his career, but when healthy, Barzal consistently remained among the Islanders' most impactful players. His leadership role expanded as veteran teammates departed, and he became one of the faces of the franchise alongside players such as Bo Horvat and longtime Islanders captain Anders Lee.

As his career has progressed, Barzal has continued to demonstrate why he is regarded as one of the NHL's premier playmakers. Whether dazzling fans with highlight-reel assists or driving the Islanders' offense during critical moments, he has established himself as one of the most important players in franchise history since the departure of John Tavares. While team success has fluctuated from season to season, Barzal's combination of skill, speed, and creativity has ensured that he remains the player around whom the Islanders continue to build their future.
