NHL insider Frank Seravalli is reporting this evening that the Anaheim Ducks and New York Rangers are in "advanced discussions" on a trade involving forward Mason McTavish.

McTavish has been one of the most intriguing young forwards in the NHL since the Ducks selected him 3rd overall in the 2021 NHL Draft. Blessed with a powerful shot, a physical edge, and the ability to play a hard-nosed, two-way game down the middle, McTavish has long been viewed as one of the cornerstones of Anaheim's rebuild. Yet despite his importance to the organization, his name has become a regular fixture in NHL trade rumors over the past several seasons.

The speculation has stemmed from a variety of factors. At different points, questions have surrounded Anaheim's long-term direction, McTavish's role behind other emerging young centers, and even tense contract negotiations that fueled outside speculation about his future. More recently, reports that he had fallen down the depth chart and was even scratched during portions of the Ducks' playoff run only intensified the belief that rival teams could pry him away in the right deal. Whether those rumors were ever close to becoming reality or simply reflected how highly other general managers value him, McTavish has consistently remained one of the league's most talked-about young trade candidates.

It's easy to understand why so many teams have been linked to him. Centers with McTavish's combination of size, skill, competitiveness, and age rarely become available. Even if his offensive production hasn't yet exploded into superstar territory, he has shown flashes of becoming the type of top-six power forward every contender covets. At just 23 years old, there's still plenty of room for growth, making him an attractive buy-low candidate for teams looking to add a potential cornerstone rather than a finished product.

The Rangers, of course, are a team who have surfaced in McTavish trade rumors for awhile now. Following several disappointing seasons and an organizational retool, the Rangers are searching for younger players who can become part of their next competitive core. McTavish would check virtually every box. He would immediately give New York another legitimate top-six center capable of playing in all situations while bringing a level of physicality that has occasionally been missing from the Rangers' forward group.

His style also seems tailor-made for playoff hockey. McTavish isn't afraid to battle in front of the net, finish checks, or play with an edge, all while possessing the offensive instincts to produce 20-plus goals on a consistent basis. Those qualities could complement New York's skilled wingers and help diversify an offense that has often relied too heavily on finesse and the power play.

Of course, acquiring a player of McTavish's caliber wouldn't come cheaply. Anaheim would almost certainly demand a package built around premium young talent, high-end prospects, and valuable draft picks. The Ducks still view him as an important part of their future, meaning the Rangers would have to make an offer that significantly accelerates Anaheim's own rebuilding efforts before a deal could become realistic.

If such a blockbuster were ever completed, however, it could prove to be one of the defining trades of the Rangers' retool. McTavish has the potential to develop into the kind of power center teams spend years trying to find, and landing him would give New York another young building block capable of helping the franchise contend for years to come.
