A wild start to the third period had fans on their feet instantly.

A few seconds into the third period, Carolina Hurricanes’ Jordan Martinook and Washington Capitals’ Nic Dowd wasted absolutely no time: the gloves hit the ice right off the opening faceoff.

For Martinook, it wasn’t just about shaking up the Hurricanes. It was about standing up for his teammates. Shayne Gostisbehere and Jackson Blake had both taken heavy hits from Dowd earlier, and if there’s one thing you can say about No. 48, it’s that he wears the “A” for a reason.

He’s not the guy who shows up on the scoresheet every night, but every team needs players who answer the bell when it matters.

Martinook finished the scrap with the pin, a solid response at this time in the game.

Watch the fight below:

Dowd didn’t shy away from why he fought, either. After the game, he said the tilt was him “answering for one of his hits,” adding that it was “one of those things that just needed to be handled.” And then, because hockey loves irony, Dowd later scored to give Washington a 2–1 lead.

However, the Hurricanes forced the game into extra time, and won 3-2 in a shootout.

Oh, and here’s the wild part: This was Martinook’s first fight since February 18, 2023.

I definitely did not have “Jordan Martinook throws his gloves seconds into the third period” on my bingo card tonight… but honestly? I’m here for it.
