Rick Tocchet throws his players under the bus after Flyers' historic 0-6-3 start

The Philadelphia Flyers are now winless through nine games to start the 2026-27 season, marking the worst opening stretch in franchise history. As the losses pile up, head coach Rick Tocchet's postgame comments are only making things worse.

After Thursday's 2-1 loss to the Detroit Red Wings, in which Philadelphia held a lead before surrendering a late go-ahead goal from Andrew Copp with under five minutes remaining, Tocchet reportedly called out his players' consistency. The remarks struck many observers as the coach placing blame squarely on the roster rather than taking ownership of the team's struggles.

“Consistency. You just can’t have 4-5 people; we need everybody to contribute.”

It is not the first time a coach in a tailspin has turned the spotlight on his players. But doing so after a historically bad nine-game stretch, one that includes a 0-6-3 record, carries different weight. The optics of a head coach publicly questioning his group's effort or execution during a winless run can fracture a locker room quickly.

The loss to Detroit was particularly painful. Anton Johansson scored his first career NHL goal for the Red Wings, and the Flyers appeared poised to finally break through before the late collapse. Instead, Philadelphia watched another winnable game slip away.

Tocchet's decision to single out player consistency rather than address systemic issues, whether tactical adjustments, lineup decisions, or his own role in the team's preparation, has drawn scrutiny. Coaches who publicly call out their players sometimes do so as a motivational tactic, hoping the accountability sparks a response. Other times, it reads as deflection.

Whether Tocchet's comments were calculated or born out of frustration remains unclear. What is clear is that the Flyers are in crisis. A 0-6-3 start puts enormous pressure on every member of the organization, from the front office down to the fourth line.

The franchise has endured rough patches before, but never one quite like this to open a campaign. At some point, the conversation inevitably shifts from player performance to coaching. Nine games without a win tends to accelerate that timeline.
