Canada survives quarterfinal thriller thanks to Marner and Luongo can’t resist a jab
Mitch Marner is officially the man you want on your team in an elimination game, and I’m pretty sure the Maple Leafs would say the same now.
After Canada forced overtime against Czechia, Marner buried a backhand winner just 82 seconds into the extra frame, sending his teammates, fans, and the entire arena into a frenzy.
The victory was sweet, but Roberto Luongo couldn’t resist adding a little spice. The legendary goalie, and now Florida Panthers Special Advisor to the GM, took a playful shot at the Maple Leafs and their fanbase, hinting at the trade that sent Marner out of Toronto to the Vegas Golden Knights.
“Marner was born to wear that maple leaf on his chest,” Luongo tweeted, clearly poking fun at the Leafs’ misfortune while celebrating Canada’s dramatic win.
Marner's Golden Knights and Team Canada teammate Mark Stone also mocked the Leafs and their fanbase after the overtime victory:
"As a teammate, I haven't experienced that. 4Nations, gets a huge OT goal for us, makes an incredible play for the winner. Then tonight, when we need him the most, he makes the play.
"So, um ... I think it's a Toronto thing."
I always enjoy a good laugh at the Maple Leafs.
With Marner’s heroics and Luongo’s comedic shade, Canada now looks ahead to the semifinals on Friday, a step closer to a chance at Sunday’s gold medal game. And for fans watching Marner thrive, it’s impossible not to wonder what might have been if the Maple Leafs had kept him.
