Things quickly got feisty in the first period of Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final with the Carolina Hurricanes hoping to stay alive against the Panthers to force a sixth contest in Florida on Friday.

But according to Canes head coach Rod Brind’Amour, the officials are not doing his players any favour. In the first frame alone, X penalties were called and when Brind’Amour was interviewed by Jackie Redmond, who asked him about how the game was handled by the referees, the bench boss simply called them out.

“These aren’t real penalties. That’s the way this series has gone. We’ve just got to stop the hitting and then just go play.”

One good thing going for Brind’Amour and the Hurricanes is that their penalty kill has gotten much better as the series unfolds. Florida is now 0 for their last 10 on the power play.

After 20 minutes of play, the Hurricanes have a 2-0 lead in the game and will keep pushing to make sure they can stay alive in the series.

However, it is possible that Brind’Amour could have less money in his pockets next time if the league chooses to fine him for his comments during the game on the live broadcast…
