Hurricanes name their starter ahead of Game 1 against the Senators.
The Ottawa Senators and the Carolina Hurricanes will face off in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, and one of the big question marks for both teams coming into this one surrounds what kind of goaltending each team can expect to get in this series.
On Saturday, Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour named his starting netminder when he revealed that it will be Frederik Andersen who will get the start for the Hurricanes. Andersen has not had a great season, with a a 3.05 goals against average and a .876 save percentage over 35 games this season. That being said he does have far and away the most playoff experience out of Brind'Amour's current options, which is why I suspect that he got the nod.
Andersen has appeared in 85 playoff games over his career in the National Hockey League and has a career .914 save percentage over those games.
The Hurricanes also have Brandon Bussi and Pyotr Kochetkov at their disposal, however they have chosen to go with Andersen. Bussi played a significant role for the Hurricanes this season, appearing in 39 games and earning a 2.44 goals against average and a .895 save percentage over that stretch.
Kochetkov on the other hand appeared in just 8 games with a 2.33 goals against average and a .899 save percentage.
Luckily for the Hurricanes there are plenty of questions when it comes to the Senators goaltending situation as well, with many questioning the ability and even availability of Senators goaltender Linus Ullmark at different points during the season.
Did Brind'Amour make the right call in going with the experienced playoff goaltender? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
