The Carolina Hurricanes have just completed a dominant performance in the Eastern Conference Final, dominating the Montreal Canadiens in what some are already calling one of the most lopsided playoff rounds in National Hockey League history.

Rod Brind'Amour Explains Why They Were So Dominant

It was a long and difficult road for Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour to once again reach the Stanley Cup Final, but following the momentous occasions Brind'Amour was the picture of humility.

When asked why the Hurricanes had so thoroughly dominated the Canadiens, Brind'Amour explained that he believed that circumstances outside of the the Eastern Conference Final had played a major factor in the series.

"There's a lot of things probably but I think.... I look at it from the other side of things, they played a couple of hard series," said Brind'Amour. "Once you push the other team to that point.... I think they were a little bit fatigued because of what they had to go through, and we were the opposite."

Brind'Amour is referencing the two grueling series the Canadiens had to play just to reach the Eastern Conference Final, a 7 game series against a very tough and experienced Tampa Bay Lightning team and another 7 game series against and a young and up and coming Buffalo Sabres squad.

"I think that really played into our hands," admitted Brind'Amour. "The score and the way the games were, that's not how this probably would have gone had they been a little fresher. I think that had a lot to do with it."

A Historically Dominant Performance

As I mentioned there are those who are already calling this the most lopsided playoff victory in National Hockey League history and that includes analytics expert Patrick Bacon of Top Down Hockey. According to Bacon, the Hurricanes actually dethroned the 2020-2021 Montreal Canadiens who established the record against the Winnipeg Jets, for the largest share of expected goals in an NHL playoff series.

That wasn't the only record established in this series however with the Montreal Canadiens establishing a record for offensive futility during this series, putting up the fewest shots over a 3 game span in NHL playoff history.
