A surprise move from the Jets?
It appears as though the Winnipeg Jets have made a surprising move.
On Sunday night, Jets reporter Ken Wiebe revealed that his sources had informed him that Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff has received a three year contract extension from ownership. The move comes as a surprise given that many pundits believed the Jets would be playoff contenders this season, a bar they failed to live up to by missing out on the Stanley Cup playoffs entirely. In spite of that it would appear that Jets ownership are content with the work of Cheveldayoff, as this deal will keep him in his position for several more years.
Although there has yet to be a formal announcement, Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff has been given a three-year contract extension to continue to run the hockey team.
On top of the team's struggles on the ice this season, Cheveldayoff was also embroiled in a scandal off the ice when it was revealed that he had been connected to the Kyle Beach investigation in Chicago after the Blackhawks failed to properly respond to Beach reporting sexual abuse at the hands of what was then Blackhawks video coach Brad Aldrich.
In spite of this added scandal the Jets continue to stand by Cheveldayoff and perhaps that should come as little surprise. Cheveldayoff is one of the longest tenured general managers in the National Hockey League and has been serving as general manager of the Winnipeg Jets since June 8th of 2011, a clear sign that he is in the good graces of ownership. If the Jets were willing to let the Blackhawks investigation play out and remain loyal to Cheveldayoff, one losing season is unlikely to shake their faith in the long standing GM.
Cheveldayoff will now have quite the to do list as the Jets head into an offeseason that could see significant turnover on their roster. Perhaps at the very top of that list will be what to do with veteran Jets forward Mark Scheifele, who on Sunday made comments that suggested he isn't thrilled with the current direction of the team.
