In case you missed it, the Toronto Maple Leafs officially signed KHL star Ilya Mikheyev to a one year contract earlier today.
Interestingly enough, it was former Mike Babcock disciple Pavel Datsyuk who convinced Mikheyev to sign with the Leafs. Now, fans are left wondering if the Babcock connection could ultimately lead the Leafs to landing Datsyuk as a free agent this upcoming offseason.
It’s no secret that Datsyuk has expressed interest in returning to the NHL, but until now the belief was that he’d sign with his old team the Detroit Red Wings. Could the Leafs be in the mix for the 40 year old Datsyuk?
Interesting. Veeeerrry interesting.
At first blush it seems crazy, but on a good contract Datsyuk could provide the Leafs with the type of forward depth that they need. Don’t be surprised if this rumour picks up steam as we draw closer to July 1st.
