Rumor: Even more KHL cutbacks coming
Keystone Press

After news broke recently that the KHL had decided to contract by two teams for the 2017-18 season, speculation ran rampant on the league’s ability to finance and govern itself moving forward. Well… you ain’t seen nuthin’ yet.

Immediately following the announcement that both Metallurg Novokuznetsk and Medvescak Zagreb would not compete in 2017-18, further news broke that claimed the league was $17.7 million in arrears on player salaries. Today, a rumor was reported by KHL insider Slava Malamud that, if true, could damage the league’s reputation beyond repair.

The teams in question, Lada Togliatti, Amur Khabarovsk and HC Ugra are three of the biggest underperforming teams in the KHL’s eastern division and have stuggled both on and off the ice in recent seasons. Regardless, losing five teams in just two seasons would be a huge cause for concern. Despite this news, however, the KHL insists it has interest in expanding further into Asia, as well as Western Europe.
