Things got even uglier between the Philadelphia Flyers and forward Vincent Lecavalier on Wednesday after comments made by his agent were widely reported. The comments read an awful lot like a threat to Flyer's management and it comes as little surprise now that Tim Panaccio of Comcast Sportsnet Philly is reporting that the Flyers are actively seeking to trade Lecavalier after July 1st. The reason Hextall can't trade him before the draft, even though he would probably much prefer that scenario, is as a result of Lecavalier's $2 million dollar signing bonus he's owed on July 1st, no team will make that deal until after the Flyers have paid the bonus. According to Pannacio the Flyers nearly managed to trade him to two different teams at last year's NHL draft but obviously they didn't pan out.
The Flyers had two near-deals going last June at the draft. One with Florida and one with Nashville. Both fell through.
It's likely going to be considerably more difficult to trade him after a bad season that saw him relegated to the fourth line or scratched more often than not, but Hextall is determined to get the deal done. Whether or not the deal becomes a reality Lecavalier is unlikely to play for the Flyers next season based on comments made by the team's GM.
“It hasn’t worked for him and it hasn’t worked for us.”
