While there have been rumblings about the Dallas Stars looking to move their #3 overall pick in the 2017 National Hockey League Entry Draft, we may now have a better idea of what they are looking for in return.

NHL.com's Scott Burnside is reporting that the Dallas Stars are likely searching for a defenseman, and it sounds like they are getting a lot of interest from rival NHL teams. From NHL.com:

That has created an avenue for Dallas GM Jim Nill to use the third overall pick as an asset or part of a package of assets to acquire a young, everyday player, presumably a defenseman, who could help the team right now and moving forward.

Between interview sessions with the draft eligible players gathered in Buffalo, Nill said on Thursday he's received more calls about the third overall pick than he imagined he might when the Stars moved from 8th to 3rd at the draft lottery.

When one considers that the Stars have reportedly talked to Vancouver about this deal you have to wonder if Chris Tanev was the target given Dallas' desire for a defenseman.

It's worth noting here that Burnside believes the Minnesota Wild and the Anaheim Ducks are the best fit for such a deal. The Wild could offer one of Jonas Brodin, Marco Scandella and Matt Dumba, while Anaheim could offer one of Shea Theodore, Brandon Montour and Josh Manson.

More to come on this potential deal.
