Rumor: Marc Bergevin linked to a rival NHL team.

The Habs GM on his way out?

For quite some time now there have been conversations in Montreal regarding the uncertainty surrounding the future of Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin.

In July of this year National Hockey League insider Pierre LeBrun reported that Canadiens owner Geoff Molson had reached out to Bergevin in order to work on a new contract, but for whatever reason a deal has failed to materialize. This story has been made even bigger by the fact that the Canadiens are coming off a deep run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, one that saw them reach the final before eventually losing to a very tough Tampa Bay Lightning team.

Now Bergevin is in the final year of an expiring contract and the questions about whether or not his future will be with the Montreal Canadiens are growing ever louder. As if there wasn't already enough of a story here in a hockey crazed market like the city of Montreal, NHL insider Larry Brooks has just tossed some gasoline of his own onto the fire.

In his most recent article published for the New York Post, Brooks indicates that he has heard whispers linking the aforementioned Bergevin to the Los Angeles Kings organization. More specifically Brooks was advised by his source to not discount the possibility of Marc Bergevin finding himself in a situation next season where he is working under the leadership of Kings president of hockey operations Luc Robitaille.

If Bergevin does indeed intend to leave the Canadiens organization at the end of this season, having his next job already lined up would certainly not be a terrible idea. Not to mention the prospect of working with an NHL legend like Luc Robitaille would no doubt be extremely appealing to anyone in the world of hockey, even for a former player like Bergevin himself.

Brooks did not specify what kind of role Bergevin would be looking to take on in the Kings organization, but you have to believe that it would be in some type of management role. What this might mean for current Los Angeles Kings general manager Rob Blake is also interesting, although to be clear Brooks has not indicated that he believes Bergevin would take over Blake's role.

Stay tuned for more on this developing story.
