Rumor: NHL players allowed to smoke marijuana next season?

Several changes have occurred in the National Hockey League in the recent seasons, and another major modification in the National Hockey League could be made.

As of July 1, marijuana use will be legal in Canada, and according to TSN insider Darren Dreger, players could state that they can use pot during the season. 

"Marijuana is not a performance-enhancing substance and therefore it’s not on the National Hockey League’s banned substances list. So, theoretically, there could be an argument made to allow for its use for medicinal purposes in the league," Dreger explains. 

Dreger predicts that a discussion could take place between the NHL and National Hockey League Players’ Association, but it is to be reminded that marijuana is among the variety of drugs tested for under the umbrella of the joint Substance Abuse and Behavioural Health Program.

"Legalizing its use in Canada doesn't mean it will automatically be dropped from that list."

The list of  banned substances gets reviewed every year, and nothing has hinted at upcoming changes in the next years. 

Union sources suggest if marijuana is determined to be an appropriate means to treat pain relief for players in Canada, both camps should put the review of pot back on the table.
