Rumor: NHL salary cap to undergo MASSIVE change
KeyStone Press

The NHL's executives and general managers met in Montreal this weekend in honor of the league's 100th anniversary. The meeting covered several topics, ranging from changes to rules, clarifications on several happenings around the NHL, and the growth of the league.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman revealed the league's projected revenue for the 2017-18 season.

NHL insider believes this generated revenue could translate to a steep climb in the salary cap.

The salary cap for the 2017-18 season is at $75 million, a slight increase over last season's $73 million. A salary cap at $80-82 million would mark a $5-7 million increase - giving several teams the much-needed flexibility to extend their young stars and target players in trade and free agency.

Of course, with salary caps rising, player salaries tend to trend upwards proportionally to the increase. Some contract negotiations between teams and agents go based on what percentage of the cap the contract takes up. They will use comparable contracts of other players to negotiate a deal. A player who signs $5 million in 2010 took up a sizeable chunk of cap space while a player who signs for the same amount today would take up much less - meaning a player of the same calibre would ask for more money.

It'll be very interesting as the year goes on to see if this prediction comes to fruition. It would make for a very intriguing off-season.
