Rumor: NHL team set to name a new captain.
Keystone Press

With massive new money may come massive responsibility.

Earlier we reported that the Buffalo Sabres had signed 20-year-old forward Jack Eichel to one of the richest contracts in the National Hockey League, a massive 8-year deal worth $80 million and now we're hearing there may be some big strings attached to that deal as well.

Kontinental Hockey League insider Aivis Kalnins is now reporting that Eichel is set to be named as the next captain of the Buffalo Sabres, a move that would make him one of the youngest captains in the League.

The move would make sense if the Sabres feel Eichel is a genuine leader. The organization appears to have cut ties with former captain Brian Gionta this summer by not renewing his contract, and that would leave a void at the position for the team to fill. There's also the matter of having Eichel locked up for the next 8 seasons, ensuring he won't be going anywhere anytime soon.

No word yet on when the announcement might be made.
