Rumor: Oilers linked to former Wings and Pens forward after missing out on Brassard

In case you missed it yesterday, former NHLer turned radio host Georges Laraque reported that veteran forward Derik Brassard had agreed to terms on a one year deal with the Edmonton Oilers.

Just minutes later though, NHL insider Chris Johnston reported that Brassard was indeed closing in on a new contract, but not with the Oilers.

It was confirmed later in the afternoon that Brassard had indeed signed a one year, $1.2 million deal with the New York Islanders.



So now, having lost on on Brassard, what’s the plan for the Oilers? They could still desperately use someone capable of playing in their top six forward group, but there are slim pickings on the free agent market. Oilers insider Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal however is linking former Pittsburgh Penguins, Florida Panthers and Detroit Red Wings center Riley Sheahan to the Oilers.

The 27 year old Sheahan had just nine goals and 19 points in 82 games split between the Penguins and Panthers last season. He was originally drafted in the first round (21st overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
