A strong performance from a young goaltender may be about to earn him his very first National Hockey League contract.

According to a report from Ben Steiner of CBC Sports, 22 year old goaltender Connor Ungar is expected to sign a contract with the Edmonton Oilers of the NHL after a breakout season at Brock University. Ungar is not expected to immediately jump onto the NHL roster, but instead Steiner reports that Ungar will initially be assigned to the minors upon signing his new deal.

Ungar previously spent several seasons in the Western Hockey League where he was solid, ending his last season with the Moose Jaw Warriors with a .925 save percentage and a 2.58 goals against average over 38 games. Ungar took the next step this season however with Brock University, posting a .932 save percentage and a 2.15 goals against average over 26 games.

It is unclear when exactly the Oilers decided to put Ungar on their radar, but it seems very likely that his standout performance at Brock University has played a major role in drawing attention from teams in the NHL.

Steiner does add that Ungar is currently fielding other offers, but emphasizes that the Oilers are currently leading the charge on that front.

Stay tuned for additional details.
