Rumor: Red Wings may be looking to acquire superstar player.

Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland has been facing a great deal of criticism as of late, especially when it comes to the contract situation with restricted free agent Andreas Athanasiou, but would fans feel different if they new he had a master plan? 

National Hockey League analyst Pierre McGuire made some very interesting comments during a recent radio interview, comments that pertain to New York Islanders captain John Tavares and his future in the National Hockey League.

"Here's what I would say to you. There's one team that's an original six team that will be desperately in need of a superstar player, the Detroit Red Wings"

While many have speculated for quite some time that he could end up as a Toronto Maple Leaf, McGuire believes the Red Wings and one other team are the true threat. 

"My fear would be Detroit and then secondly Buffalo." 

McGuire points to the large amount of available cap space the Red Wings will have to play with, and if Ken Holland believes he truly has a shot at Tavares this may be why he's being conservative when it comes to the contracts he hands out this summer.
