Rumor: Things are heating up around Dan Girardi.

The Former All-Star Defenseman Derby Has Already Started

It was a surprise for many in the hockey world when the news about the buyout of Dan Girardi’s contract leaked. The big defenseman was bought out by the Rangers in a surprising move obviously intended to free up some cap space approaching the UFA market. Girardi’s contract was quite heavy at 5,5M$ a year for three more years, but he was the crowd’s favorite for so long that this move seemed improbable. 

As we are heading slowly but surely to July 1st UFA opening market, Dan Girardi is one name that comes out often. Craig Custance of the Athletic Detroit has reported that the Red Wings are interested in bringing on the long-time Rangers blueliner, going as far as to reach out to him ahead of free agency opening on July 1.

Apparently, Tampa Bay Lightning are also in the mix to acquire the veteran defenseman.
